Some people know me as a math tutor, and others use me as an ADHD coach. I don’t talk about my ADHD coaching services as often as I should. Often, the two services overlap, as many of my students have ADHD. I tutor them in math and offer coaching to help them manage their ADHD in school and at home.
So let’s talk about the ADHD coaching side today. I’ll explain what it is and what I do with clients in ADHD coaching sessions.
ADHD coaching helps people with ADHD better manage the challenges they face in their personal, academic, or professional lives. I also help parents learn how to raise kids with ADHD. It focuses on practical strategies and skills to improve daily functioning, organization, and meeting goals. There’s no deadline to it – we meet for however long it takes for you to feel confident in the habits we establish on your own.
ADHD coaching online can be whatever you want it to be! There are different levels of ADHD symptoms, and everyone struggles with something unique. No matter what we talk about, you’re sure to gain some of these benefits:
ADHD is a superpower, not a disability or weakness. I want my clients to feel empowered to reach their full potential. I encourage my clients to feel motivated in their journey as leaders.
First, I help identify the core challenge the child or parent is experiencing (Yep, I coach both kids with ADHD and parents of kids with ADHD.) It all comes down to accountability and deadlines. People with ADHD thrive off deadlines.
The coaching depends on the client – I tailor each session to their unique needs. Some of the things I’ve worked on with clients are:
Once we decide on the main goal they want to accomplish, we break it down into small goals and things to do along the way. So, if a child wants to get an A in math, we talk about the steps to get there, like setting up a dedicated homework space, studying for 30 minutes every day, and organizing their homework binder. If an adult wants to declutter their home, we start with one room at a time and figure out what can stay and what needs to go.
I always write down meeting notes for parents so everyone is on the same page. I like to be transparent about the things we talk about. This isn’t therapy, so there are no confidentiality requirements. I’m just there to help people with ADHD function better in their daily lives. I learned how to do it without medication, and I know there are others out there who don’t want to use medication to manage their symptoms either. I teach them the holistic techniques I’ve learned.
Anyone with ADHD! It helps to have someone on your side to listen and understand where you’re coming from and also to help keep you accountable. If I know someone is waiting for me to complete something, I don’t want to let them down, so I do it on time. That’s the same idea with coaching. We set goals to do before our next call, and I reward ADHD coaching clients when they do it.
My ADHD coaching is all about empowerment. I want my clients to walk away feeling like they’ve learned routines and habits that help them manage their ADHD symptoms without medication. It’s possible, even when it doesn’t feel like it!
