Clearing the Clutter: Spring Cleaning Tips for Parents

Happy Persian New Year! We celebrate the U.S. New Year on 12/31 and 1/1 like everyone else. But something unique about my family is that we also celebrate the first day of spring or Nowruz. To us, it marks a new beginning, and it’s a great way to welcome spring.

During Nowruz, I also dedicate time to spring cleaning. I know a lot of people participate in spring cleaning. It’s a great time to get things in order before we all get crazy busy during summer! I like to think of it as coming out of hibernation!

Keep reading and listen to the episode for my best spring cleaning tips!

What is Nowruz?

Nowruz means the season of life. It’s a time of awakening and going from the darkness to the light. It happens around the same time as daylight savings, so that’s what coming to the light means.

So, what are some things I do during Nowruz to get ready for the new season? Spring cleaning. Norwuz gives me an excuse to get my house in order before our big family gatherings. I want to share how I do it, so it might help you be more organized in the ‘new year’ 😊

Spring Cleaning Tips

The first thing I love doing is cleaning my rugs. I take them to a professional cleaner in my area, and they do a great job bathing them. I do plenty of vacuuming myself, but a deep clean is needed once a year. It’s nice to have them refreshed and looking (and smelling) nice and clean.

I also flip my wardrobe. I move my winter clothes out of the closet and into storage and replace them with my summer clothes. I live in an older home, so I don’t have a walk-in closet. I need to conserve space! I do this for my boys, too. Anything they’ve outgrown, I get rid of.

Next is the kitchen. This is a big project… you can accumulate things so quickly in a kitchen. Maybe you needed an ingredient for one recipe you made a few months ago but haven’t used it since. Maybe you have ingredients that are expired. Maybe you have appliances that you haven’t used in a while. There’s so much you can get rid of or reorganize in your kitchen. This is a great time to deep clean your kitchen, too. When was the last time you wiped down the inside of your fridge and freezer? 😬 Go through your pantry, fridge, and storage space to declutter, clean, and get a fresh start.

Here are a few other quick spring cleaning tips!

  • In your decluttering, did you find anything broken or stained? Toss it.
  • Do you have seasonal decorations? Put them away and get out new decor.
  • Make a list of things you want to plant in your garden this year.
  • Rotate your mattress.
  • Check your smoke detectors.
  • Clean your garbage disposal.
  • Clean and inspect your gutters.

My free Decluttering and OMG for ADHD guides can help with spring cleaning. It helps you decide what to keep and what can go. Spring cleaning is an excellent time to get rid of things you don’t use or need. Use this handy set of questions to help minimize the clutter in your life. It can apply to clothing, household, office, and day-to-day items.
