DIY Skin Tallow Recipe

I tell my clients all the time: If you can have a tidy calm home and use chemical-free products more often, your ADHD symptoms will significantly be reduced. Not to mention, holistic products have fewer endocrine disruptors (chemicals that interfere with your body’s hormones.) I’m all for living a more toxin-free lifestyle!

Cleaner products = Clear mind and fewer ADHD symptoms 🥳

As I explore healthier options for my clients and expand my knowledge on meal prepping (bone broth and sourdough bread are my favorites!), I have now learned how to make oil and skin care lotion.

My son was showing signs of eczema but after using this tallow recipe on him, his eczema completely cleared. He hasn’t had an outbreak since. I’m so excited to share this skin tallow recipe with you. It might not be perfect, but it’s been a great clean product for my family.

What is Skin Tallow?

Skin tallow is a skincare product made from rendered animal fat. It’s traditionally used in skincare products and soaps. It has rich nutrient content with fatty acids, such as:

  • Stearic acid
  • Palmitic acid
  • Oleic acid

These are similar to the natural oils our skin produces. This makes tallow a great skin moisturizer and hydrator!

Benefits of Skin Tallow

There are tons of benefits of skin tallow. I’ve been using my skin tallow recipe for years and have seen many of these benefits for myself, my family, and my clients.

  • Deep Moisturization: Prevents water loss and keeps skin hydrated and soft.
  • Rich in Nutrients: Tallow has vitamins A, D, E, and K, which help maintain healthy skin texture.
  • Supports Skin Barrier: The fatty acids in tallow help strengthen and repair the skin’s barrier. This is why it’s great for clearing eczema!
  • Anti-inflammatory Properties: Tallow can soothe irritated skin and reduce redness.
  • Non-comedogenic: Tallow doesn’t clog pores so it’s great for skin prone to acne.
  • Promotes Skin Elasticity: The fatty acids boost collagen production, which helps maintain skin firmness.
  • Natural and Free from Additives: With a DIY recipe, you won’t get the chemicals and preservatives in other skincare products on the market.

Tallow is a popular natural skincare product because of its benefits. It’s a simple and effective way to moisturize and protect your skin.

Choosing the Right Ingredients

Grass-fed or organic sources of meat for tallow are the best option. Grass-fed animals have a healthier ratio of fatty acids and have anti-inflammatory properties, which are beneficial for skin health. Organic animals are raised without the use of growth hormones, antibiotics, or genetically modified feeds. This reduces the likelihood of these chemicals being transferred to your skin tallow. Grass-fed bones are so important for your tallow recipe.

DIY Skin Tallow Recipe

Onto the recipe! My DIY skin tallow recipe will give you several small jars worth of tallow. Use it up or make it and give it as a gift to your friends and family! Watch my tutorial here!

Ingredients and Tools

  • 2-3 pounds of grass-fed bones
  • 5-quart crock pot
  • Cheesecloth
  • Small mason jars
  • 8 tablespoons of salt
  • Essential oil of your choice

Steps

  1. Fill the crockpot midway with water.
  2. Add grass-fed bones and 4 TBSP of salt.
  3. Cook on high for up to 24 hours.
  4. Drain the liquid using a cheesecloth to separate the oil from the bones. Place the oil in a metal bowl.
  5. Let the oil cool down. You will start to see the oil turn white and harden.
  6. Place it in the fridge overnight.
  7. The next day, you will see a solid piece of tallow. Separate it from the water and scrape off all the beef residue underneath.
  8. Put the tallow back into a clean crock pot along with more water and 3-5 tablespoons of salt.
  9. Cook on medium for 12 hours.
  10. Repeat steps 4-7.
  11. Place your clean tallow in a jar.
  12. Add your favorite essential oils. I love Young Living frankincense and lavender.

I use small Mason jars to store my tallow. When storing your tallow, use an airtight container in a cool, dark place. Tallow can last six months at room temperature or longer if refrigerated.

And there you have it! You have made your very own tallow balm.

How to Use Your Homemade Skin Tallow

Now that you have your DIY tallow, let’s talk about how to incorporate it into your skincare routine.

  • Daily Moisturizer: Take a small amount of tallow and warm it between your palms. Massage it onto your face or body.
  • Dry Patches and Eczema: Apply the tallow directly to areas with dry skin, eczema, or psoriasis in the morning and night.
  • As a Healing Balm: Treat minor cuts, scrapes, or burns by applying a thin layer over the area.
  • Face and Lips: Apply a small amount on your face at night after cleansing. You can use it as a lip balm, too!
  • Hand and Foot Balm: Massage tallow into your hands and feet before bed, then cover with gloves or socks to lock in moisture overnight (this is one of my favorite uses!)
  • Shaving Cream Alternative: Apply a thin layer to your skin before shaving to protect against razor burns.
  • Scalp Treatment: Warm a small amount of tallow in your hands and massage it into your scalp for dryness and itch. Leave it on for 20-30 minutes, then wash your hair.
  • Baby Skincare: Apply a small amount of tallow to your baby’s skin after a bath or during diaper changes.

Holistic Skincare

Using clean products greatly helps my ADHD symptoms. I love this skin tallow recipe and make it all the time! I save so much money by making my own tallow balm because it’s a very expensive product. Plus, my version is cleaner. I hope it inspired you to make some tallow for yourself!
